Beware Porting to Reliance Jio - Or Risk Losing the Number

Status:

MNP became available in India from 01 January 2011, however, the national rollout of MNP across all States and Telecom Circles occurred on 3rd July 2015. Most providers in India currently support national MNP. However, Jio still sees different states as not part of the same India. Jio sim cannot be ported to any other states as of now (confirmed by Jio as part of communication #8916299 on 13th August 2017.

Will it matter? It will matter if you are have an outstation Adhar. Most of the providers including Jio does not allow you to re-verify using outstation Adhar. For other operators you could port out to your home circle, re-verify and retain number. But with Jio you cannot port out to another circle. We verified this by going to another circle with Jio's porting code and it was telling code is invalid.

Another option is to port to another network within same circle and then port out to home circle after 3 months. Both of these needs to happen before Feb 2018. So you should port out to another provider at least 4 months before that to be safe on retaining the number. That means it is safer to port by late September 2017 or early October 2017.

Jan 2018

Checked again and they say they allow verification now.
